Male Peer Support Theory
Male peer support theory is defined as attachments to male peers and the
resources they provide that legitimate and perpetuate the abuse of women.
College men who consume alcohol two or more times a week and had friends who support physical and emotional abuse of women are nine times more likely to commit sexual assault than men with none of these characteristics
This theory and its relation to rape culture on college campuses is most often exemplified through the culture of fraternities. In these cultures, the term "brothers" is most often used when referring to members of the same fraternity. This "brotherhood" coupled with an unhealthy view of masculinity and narrow, stereotyped view of women perpetuates the objectification of women. When there is a dominant or hegemonic male explicitly telling other men to abuse a woman, they are more likely to do it. Therefore, this perpetuates an environment of deviance and secrecy amongst fraternity brothers in the realm of sexual assault.
